Tulips for Spring!
Recently, I finished two quilt tops and sent them off for professional machine quilting leaving me itching to start on a new spring project.  I found a beautiful antique quilt photo and wanted to update the look with spring colors and shapes that I could cut with Leaves Galore.

I knew the focus would be on tulips since I have not used this flower in a quilt yet.  The tulips are made from one "S" and one "Z" shaped curve cut with the Leaves Galore petite 2.5" curve and one 4" standard shaped leaf made from the Grande template.  You can use the color instruction sheet on the website to learn to cut the standard leaf shapes and the "S"  and "Z" shaped curves.  Once you have a pile of "S" and "Z" shapes and standard melon/leaf shapes, you can prefuse the elements of the tulip on an applique pressing sheet as shown below.
Space the "S" and "Z" shapes close together or further apart to get a skinny or fat tulip shape using the same three elements.  Here are two tulips shown from the back so you can see the spacing between the "S" and "Z".  Lift the entire shape off as one unit and apply to your quilt top.  I make these tulips by the dozens so I will have plenty to play with when I make my quilts.  Long "S"  and "Z" shapes made with the 5" side of the Petite template make excellent tulip leaves.  Keep these leaves thin and elegant.  You can see the tulip leaves and the tulips used in the row quilt below or in the scattered tulips at the top of this page.  I cut the long curvy vines with the 8" Leaves Galore template.  Both the row quilt and the scattered tulips were cut and fused in one day.  I feel a pattern coming on!
So think spring and make a tulip garden of your own in minutes with Leaves Galore!

Kathleen Murphy is a long time friend and fellow guild member from Thimble Pleasures Quilt Guild.  Kathleen and I have been on many committees together and I admire and respect her amazing talents!  Kathleen was one of my first prototype testers for the Leaves Galore templates.  Even before I knew how to use them, Kathleen had her own ideas about how to use Leaves Galore in her quilts. The quilts below are all interpretations of her Hot and Cold Flow pattern  available at SuePellandDesigns.com
